Privacy policy

Last updated September 14, 2026. Commentary is an early-stage product in testing, and this policy explains in plain language what we collect and what we do with it.

Who we are

Commentary is a social platform where the comments are the content. This policy covers commentarysocial.com and everything you do inside the app.

What we collect

  • Account details: your email address, password (stored encrypted — we never see it), display name, handle, bio, and profile photo.
  • Your content: posts, photos, videos, comments, acceptance speeches, and anything else you publish.
  • Your activity: votes, follows, leaderboard and Hall of Fame placements, and reports you submit.
  • Basic technical data: standard server logs such as the time of a request and general device or browser information, used to keep the service running and secure.

How we use it

  • To run the app: show your feed, rank comments, and keep score.
  • To build your profile, badges, and follower counts.
  • To send you notification emails — for example when a comment of yours makes the daily leaderboard, the Hall of Fame, or the Prompt of the Day Top 50.
  • To keep Commentary safe: moderation, spam prevention, and abuse reports.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising. Sponsored posts you see in the feed are not personalised using your data.

What other people can see

Your handle, display name, profile photo, bio, posts, comments, acceptance speeches, and public stats (follower counts, comment votes, badges) are visible to anyone who visits Commentary, including people who are not signed in. Your email address is never shown publicly.

Who you follow and which individual comments you voted on are only visible to signed-in accounts, not to the open internet.

Who we share it with

We share data only with the service providers that make the app work: our hosting and database provider (which stores your account and content) and our email provider (which delivers notification and password emails). We may also disclose information if we are legally required to.

Emails you receive

We send account emails (password resets, sign-in help) and notification emails about your leaderboard, Hall of Fame, and Prompt of the Day results. Leaderboard emails are limited to at most one per day. If you would like to stop receiving notification emails, email us and we will turn them off for your account.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and content while your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your profile and personal details; comments may remain but will no longer be linked to your name.

Your choices

  • Edit or update your profile details at any time from your profile page.
  • Delete a post or comment you made.
  • Ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account — just email us.

Children

Commentary is not intended for anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

Security

Accounts are protected by encrypted passwords and leaked-password screening, uploaded media is stored privately and served through expiring links, and database access is restricted by per-user rules. No service can promise perfect security, but we take this seriously.

Changes to this policy

As Commentary grows we may update this policy. We will change the date at the top, and for anything significant we will let you know in the app.
